{"id":4925,"date":"2019-12-27T18:08:29","date_gmt":"2019-12-27T17:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=4925"},"modified":"2019-12-27T18:08:30","modified_gmt":"2019-12-27T17:08:30","slug":"halcyon-days-otter-safari-19-12-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/northumberland\/druridge\/halcyon-days-otter-safari-19-12-19","title":{"rendered":"Halcyon days; Otter Safari 19\/12\/19"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a couple of weeks where we didn&#8217;t have any scheduled trips it was a nice change of scenery to have a day out around <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Druridge Bay and southeast Northumberland (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/experiences\/tour\/12\" target=\"_blank\">Druridge Bay and southeast Northumberland<\/a> and I collected Kev from Woodhorn as the rain started to fall&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mid-morning produced a trio of great birds.  A 1st winter <strong><em>Glaucous Gull<\/em><\/strong> had just settled back into a roost when Kev spotted a <strong><em>Kingfisher<\/em><\/strong> perched in front of us as a stunning drake <strong><em>Pintail<\/em><\/strong> up-ended just beyond it.  <strong><em>Mallard, Gadwall, Teal, Wigeon, Tufted Duck<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Little Grebe<\/em><\/strong> all scattered in panic as a young male <strong><em>Marsh Harrier<\/em><\/strong> drifted over the pool and along the reeds where <strong><em>Water Rails<\/em><\/strong> were squealing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our picnic spot produced a <strong><em>Fulmar<\/em><\/strong> arcing over the sea in sight of cliff-edge nest sites and <strong><em>Redshank, Curlew, Turnstone<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Oystercatcher<\/em><\/strong> all flew from rocks and along the shore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The afternoon brought more <strong><em>Goldeneye <\/em><\/strong>and <strong><em>Little Grebe<\/em><\/strong>, another <strong><em>Kingfisher<\/em><\/strong> in the deepening gloom of dusk, noisy flocks of <strong><em>Pink-footed<\/em><\/strong>, <strong><em>Greylag<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Canada Geese<\/em><\/strong> and a remarkable flock of possibly as many as 50 <strong><em>Greenfinches<\/em><\/strong> as <strong><em>Cormorants<\/em><\/strong> perched menacingly on fallen trees and <strong><em>Grey Herons<\/em><\/strong> stalked through the shallows.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a couple of weeks where we didn&#8217;t have any scheduled trips it was a nice change of scenery to have a day out around Druridge Bay and southeast Northumberland and I collected Kev from Woodhorn as the rain started to fall&#8230; Mid-morning produced a trio of great birds.
