I was really looking forward to this trip because I&#8217;ve known Ollie since we first started NEWT as he has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"his own outdoor activity business (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"http:\/\/active4seasons.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">his own outdoor activity business<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around the village <strong><em>House Sparrows<\/em><\/strong> were abundant, <strong><em>Pied Wagtails<\/em><\/strong> were in the churchyard, <strong><em>Blackbirds<\/em><\/strong> were grubbing around in tangled vegetation, <strong><em>Red Admirals<\/em><\/strong> added a touch of the exotic and around the edge of the harbour <strong><em>Bar-tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Curlew<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Ringed Plover<\/em><\/strong> were busily feeding as the eerie moaning wails of <strong><em>Grey Seals<\/em><\/strong> carried on the stiffening breeze.  Along the eastern shore <strong><em>Grey Herons<\/em><\/strong> and a <strong><em>Little Egret<\/em><\/strong> were in the rock pools, sheltered from an angry looking sea, and we headed back along the Crooked Lonnen to have lunch at the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Post Office Cafe (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/1stclassfoodholyisland.co.uk\/cafe-and-takeaway\/\" target=\"_blank\">Post Office Cafe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our post-lunch walk along the Straight Lonnen, past hawthorns with <strong><em>Goldcrests<\/em><\/strong> in constant motion, fields with <strong><em>Lapwing, Curlew, Oystercatcher<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Roe Deer<\/em><\/strong> and a dry stone wall with a pair of <strong><em>Stonechats<\/em><\/strong> brought us eventually to the exposed wind-blasted north of the island with it&#8217;s strange stunted <strong><em>Viper&#8217;s Bugloss<\/em><\/strong> and a shoreline with more <strong><em>Bar-tailed Godwits, Ringed Plovers<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Dunlin<\/em><\/strong> on the beach and a couple of female <strong><em>Eiders<\/em><\/strong> and one pristine drake in the frothy foaming surf of the rising tide.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With a biting northwesterly tearing across the causeway I arrived on Holy Island and met up with Ollie, Neil, Dawn and Sarah for a few hours birding around the island.
