Under warm sunshine I arrived in Newbiggin to collect Sue and Caroline, Ellen and Tom and Mark and Kay ahead of an afternoon and evening exploring NEWT’s favourite Otter<\/em><\/strong> locations around Druridge Bay<\/a> and southeast Northumberland…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walking through sun-dappled woodland with Robins, Blackcaps, Chiffchaffs<\/em><\/strong> and Chaffinches<\/em><\/strong> singing, Great Spotted Woodpecker<\/em><\/strong> and Nuthatch<\/em><\/strong> calling and Wrens<\/em><\/strong> furtively flitting through waterside vegetation we could hear the harsh cawing of two Carrion Crows<\/em><\/strong> from a bare treetop, and a few feet below them was the cause of their ire; a Grey Heron<\/em><\/strong> just minding its own business…although to be fair to the crows, a Grey Heron<\/em><\/strong> just standing still is probably up to something \ud83d\ude09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Buzzard<\/em><\/strong> was soaring above the treetops, two more herons<\/em><\/strong> were playing cat-and-mouse with us along the river and then Mute Swans, Canada Geese, Greylag Geese, Shelduck, Mallard<\/em><\/strong> and Gadwall<\/em><\/strong> were all sedate in the afternoon sunshine and Common Sandpipers<\/em><\/strong> were sitting on a mid-river log as the short scratchy warble of a Whitethroat<\/em><\/strong> came from a bramble patch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After our picnic spot overlooking the North Sea produced Sand Martins, Swallows<\/em><\/strong>, a Gannet<\/em><\/strong> heading south offshore and a Grey Seal<\/em><\/strong> bobbing around in the surf, the beautiful evening light was bathing Avocets<\/em><\/strong>, including several mating pairs, Lapwings<\/em><\/strong>, Curlew<\/em><\/strong>, Dunlin<\/em><\/strong> and a Grey Heron<\/em><\/strong> that found itself on the receiving end of an agitated Avocet<\/em><\/strong>…once the Avocet<\/em><\/strong> had given up on fighting with a Curlew<\/em><\/strong> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With dusk approaching and the waxing gibbous Moon<\/em><\/strong> illuminating the landscape Great Crested Grebes<\/em><\/strong> were nest-building, Black-headed Gulls<\/em><\/strong> were flycatching over the trees and the water and Canada Geese, Greylag Geese, Mallards<\/em><\/strong> and Tufted Ducks<\/em><\/strong> were all suddenly alert. With dusk taking hold and Vega, Arcturus<\/em><\/strong> and Capella<\/em><\/strong> all shining through the gloom the tufties<\/em><\/strong> took flight after all staring at the same spot, just out of sight behind a reedbed from our position…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
