Yesterday was Sue’s 8th day out with NEWT and after I collected her from Old Swarland we headed south east towards NEWT’s local patch, Druridge Bay and southeast Northumberland<\/a>…<\/p>\n

We’re now starting our Druridge Bay trips with a riparian woodland walk, and Nuthatches<\/strong><\/em> were feeding noisy fledglings in the branches overhead, Blue, Great<\/strong><\/em> and Coal Tits<\/strong><\/em> were all busily gathering mouthfuls of insects, a Common Buzzard<\/strong><\/em> was soaring just above the treetops in the bright sunshine and Bullfinches<\/strong><\/em> betrayed their presence by calling and drawing attention to themselves.<\/p>\n

Avocets<\/strong><\/em> proved to be the star of the show again but a good selection of other waders included Ringed Plover, Black-tailed Godwit<\/strong><\/em>, a very white Ruff<\/strong><\/em>, Dunlin, Curlew, Lapwing<\/strong><\/em> and a Wood Sandpiper<\/strong><\/em> delicately picking its way along the edge of a muddy puddle as Brown Hares<\/strong><\/em> loped along at the other side of the marsh.\u00a0 Speckled Wood, Common Blue<\/strong><\/em> and Small Skipper<\/strong><\/em> butterflies and a selection of dazzling damselflies<\/strong><\/em> added invertebrate interest to the afternoon but they were outshone by a micro-moth.\u00a0 Nemophora degeerella<\/strong><\/em> isn’t exactly a name that trips off the tongue, but it’s a strikingly marked little moth and, in the case of the male, has what look to be unfeasibly long antennae.\u00a0 Shelduck<\/strong><\/em> ducklings were wandering off and ignoring their parents and Great Crested Grebes<\/strong><\/em> demonstrated remarkable prowess, surfacing with fish after every dive, only to be pestered by Black-headed Gulls<\/strong><\/em> looking for an easy meal.\u00a0 Strikingly yellow and seasonally appropriate, both Yellow Wagtail<\/strong><\/em> and Yellowhammer<\/strong><\/em> flew by and Reed Bunting<\/strong><\/em> as well as as Sedge<\/strong><\/em> and Reed Warblers <\/strong><\/em>sang from nearby reed beds as Swifts, Swallows<\/strong><\/em> and both House<\/strong><\/em> and Sand Martins<\/strong><\/em> carved their way through the dense clouds of flying insects in the afternoon heat haze.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
