{"id":3787,"date":"2017-04-24T19:05:02","date_gmt":"2017-04-24T18:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3787"},"modified":"2017-04-24T19:05:02","modified_gmt":"2017-04-24T18:05:02","slug":"springtime-in-the-hills-north-pennines-bespoke-birdwatching-240417","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/northumberland\/pennines\/springtime-in-the-hills-north-pennines-bespoke-birdwatching-240417","title":{"rendered":"Springtime in the hills :-) North Pennines Bespoke Birdwatching 24\/04\/17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This morning was another early start, and I crawled out of bed at 03:30 as the alarm disrupted my sleep&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I collected Daniel and Nigel from Ponteland and we headed towards the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/experiences\/tour\/15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">North Pennines<\/a>.\u00a0 <em><strong>Curlew<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Lapwing<\/strong><\/em> were displaying over the fells, but in the icy cold stiff breeze, <em><strong>Red Grouse<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Black Grouse<\/strong><\/em> were more of a challenge to find than they were yesterday.\u00a0 <em><strong>Golden Plover, Oystercatcher, Common Snipe<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Common Redshank<\/strong><\/em> were quickly found and we came across some much more obliging <em><strong>Red Grouse<\/strong><\/em>, and two <em><strong>Fieldfare<\/strong><\/em>, before heading even further to the southwest.\u00a0 Nigel had just spotted a probable <em><strong>Common Redstart<\/strong><\/em>, in a plantation dripping with <em><strong>Mistle Thrushes<\/strong><\/em>, when the light drizzle, that had accompanied us for most of the trip, turned to sleet and then proper snow with large flakes speckling the windscreen of the car \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 We sat it out, and once the poor weather had cleared the hills produced the sort of birding that is jaw-dropping.\u00a0 First a <em><strong>Short-eared Owl<\/strong><\/em>, quartering the fells with stiff, slow, wingbeats before dropping onto a <em><strong>vole<\/strong><\/em> in the grass and then obligingly taking it onto an open area where we could watch it through the telescope.\u00a0 Soon after that we came across 14 <em><strong>Blackcock<\/strong><\/em>, who abandoned foraging, flew to a lek right in front of us and then all kicked off as a <em><strong>Woodcock<\/strong><\/em> shuffled through the grass, accompanied by an aural backdrop of calling <em><strong>Snipe<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 In the bone-chilling cold, yesterday&#8217;s <em><strong>Spring Gentians<\/strong><\/em> were no longer displaying their finery and <strong><em>Black-headed<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Lesser Black-backed Gulls<\/em><\/strong> were struggling against the breeze as <em><strong>Skylarks<\/strong><\/em> soared overhead and a Kestrel matched the success of the <em><strong>Shortie<\/strong><\/em> before we finished with lunch and a <em><strong>Dipper<\/strong><\/em> \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This morning was another early start, and I crawled out of bed at 03:30 as the alarm disrupted my sleep&#8230;
