Otter Safari 14\/04\/17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Friday was Adrian and Ruth&#8217;s 2nd day out with NEWT, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/northumberland\/cheviot-valleys\/early-spring-bespoke-cheviotsdruridge-birdwatching-100417\" target=\"_blank\">Monday&#8217;s Cheviots Valleys\/Druridge Bespoke tour<\/a>, and I arrrived at Church Point to collect them, as well as Sandra and Paco, and Rachel and Andy.\u00a0 A torrential downpour passed mercifully quickly and we were on our way for an afternoon and evening around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/experiences\/tour\/12\" target=\"_blank\">Druridge Bay<\/a> and southeast Northumberland <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tour\/1\" target=\"_blank\">searching for Otters<\/a>&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The transitional nature of mid-April was really obvious; <em><strong>Goldeneye, Red-breasted Merganser, Teal<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Wigeon<\/strong><\/em> are typical birds of winter on the Northumberland coast, but now they were alongside displaying <em><strong>Great Crested Grebes<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Avocets<\/strong><\/em> as a <em><strong>White Wagtail<\/strong><\/em> pottered along the edge of a shallow pool, <em><strong>Swallows<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Sand Martins<\/strong><\/em> were hawking newly emerged insects as the songs of <em><strong>Chiffchaff<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Sedge Warbler<\/strong><\/em> emanated from deep cover in trees and reedbeds and the descending silvery cadence of <em><strong>Willow Warbler<\/strong><\/em> trickled on the breeze.\u00a0 A noisy flock of <em><strong>Long-tailed Tits<\/strong><\/em> were just above a male <em><strong>Blackcap<\/strong><\/em> who chacked angrily as we disturbed whatever it was that he&#8217;d been up to before we walked by and the peace and elegance of <em><strong>Little Egrets<\/strong><\/em> was shattered as a <em><strong>Great White Egret<\/strong><\/em> objected to their proximity to the rushes where it was hiding.\u00a0 <em><strong>Grey Herons<\/strong><\/em> stalked the water&#8217;s edge as <em><strong>Skylarks<\/strong><\/em> ascended heavenwards, <em><strong>Meadow Pipits<\/strong><\/em> parachuted back down at the end of brief display flights and <em><strong>Reed Bunting<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Stonechat<\/strong><\/em> perched at the tops of isolated bushes in the dunes.<\/p>\n<p>With an icy cold breeze rippling the water&#8217;s surface and nipping at noses and fingers we finished at sunset with our quarry for the day having eluded us.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re often asked what the chances are of seeing an <em><strong>Otter<\/strong><\/em> on one of our trips, and it isn&#8217;t an easy question to answer.\u00a0 They&#8217;re wild animals and they don&#8217;t run to a timetable that guarantees we&#8217;ll find them.\u00a0 That&#8217;s something that makes wildlife watching so great &#8211;
