{"id":3739,"date":"2017-03-21T19:19:30","date_gmt":"2017-03-21T18:19:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=3739"},"modified":"2017-03-21T19:19:30","modified_gmt":"2017-03-21T18:19:30","slug":"a-glorious-afternoon-lindisfarne-safari-190317","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/a-glorious-afternoon-lindisfarne-safari-190317","title":{"rendered":"A glorious afternoon; Lindisfarne Safari 19\/03\/17"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I arrived in Berwick to collect Juan and Erika from the railway station for their tour of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/experiences\/tour\/16\" target=\"_blank\">Lindisfarne and the North Northumberland coast<\/a> and a first for NEWT &#8211; clients from Argentina!<\/p>\n<p>We headed down the coast in some unforecast rain and in the mighty shadow of Bamburgh Castle we watched <em><strong>Purple Sandpiper<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Turnstone<\/strong><\/em> as they picked their way through the rocks within inches of the frothing surf.\u00a0 <em><strong>Common Eider, Common Scoter, Long-tailed Duck, Guillemot<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Puffin<\/strong><\/em> were all rising and falling in a deep swell and <em><strong>Kittiwakes<\/strong><\/em> were passing by as we set the telescope up on the side of the car that was sheltered from the wind and rain.\u00a0 Heading north we came across lots of <em><strong>Shelduck, Wigeon, Teal, Curlew, Bar-tailed Godwit<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Lapwing, <\/strong><\/em>as well as smaller numbers of<em><strong> Shoveler, Goosander<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Common Redshank<\/strong><\/em>, and a lone <em><strong>Kestrel<\/strong><\/em> hanging motionless facing into the wind, then over on to Holy Island where the sky was blue, the clouds were white and fluffy and the wind was still howling&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Grey Seals<\/strong><\/em> were hauled out on the mud at low tide and as their mournful calls carried on the breeze across the island <em><strong>Skylarks<\/strong><\/em> were singing, tiny black dots against the sky, <em><strong>Meadow Pipits<\/strong><\/em> were song-flighting and there were at least 21 <em><strong>Roe Deer<\/strong><\/em> feeding in a remarkably dense herd.\u00a0 <em><strong>Red-breasted Merganser<\/strong><\/em> were having their crests ruffled by the wind, <em><strong>Pied Wagtails<\/strong><\/em> were searching for insects around the car park and panic rippled through the birds out on the mudflats.\u00a0 <em><strong>Grey Herons<\/strong><\/em> stalked through marshy edges, the eerie cries of <em><strong>Curlew<\/strong><\/em> drifted through the dunes and, as we made our way back across the causeway with the tide rising and the sun setting, <em><strong>Common Eider<\/strong><\/em> were displaying, <em><strong>Common Redshank<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Pale-bellied Brent Geese<\/strong><\/em> were on the edge of the rising water and a <em><strong>Curlew<\/strong><\/em> decided to sit on the road right in front of us \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I arrived in Berwick to collect Juan and Erika from the railway station for their tour of Lindisfarne and the North Northumberland coast and a first for NEWT &#8211; clients from Argentina!
