{"id":370,"date":"2010-01-04T11:31:43","date_gmt":"2010-01-04T11:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=370"},"modified":"2010-01-04T11:31:43","modified_gmt":"2010-01-04T11:31:43","slug":"snowy-sunday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/snowy-sunday","title":{"rendered":"Snowy Sunday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\" style=\"text-align: left;\">Yesterday we took advantage of the bright sunny weather to visit Druridge Bay and check out a couple of sites in preparation for an otter\/badger Safari on Tuesday.\u00a0 We had been out on Saturday with the same intention, but the 35mph+ northeasterly winds, and treacherous road conditions led to an early return home&#8230;<\/div>\n<p>As we drove past Cresswell, Sarah spotted a family of Whooper Swans in a roadside field.\u00a0 As they seemed fairly settled, Sarah decided to\u00a0capture an image of them in the snow.\u00a0 Luckliy we did this there and then, as there was no sign of them when we passed by there an hour later.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_371\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-371\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-371\" title=\"Whooper Swans (Cygnus cygnus) (c)Sarah Barratt\/Northern Experience Images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSC_0314web.jpg\" alt=\"Whooper Swans near Bell's Farm\" width=\"400\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSC_0314web.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSC_0314web-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-371\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Whooper Swans near Bell&#39;s Farm<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Checking all of the unfrozen water that we could find in southeast Northumberland did eventually produce a brief sighting of an Otter.<\/p>\n<p>Druridge Pools was remarkably photogenic; a handy dog-walker added to the photo opportunities and Teasels are really attractive covered in snow or frost.\u00a0 There was a noticeable movement of Skylarks along the coast as well; 200+ as we walked from the Oddie Hide back to the car.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_372\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-372\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-372\" title=\"The access road at Druridge Pools (c)Martin Kitching\/Northern Experience Images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/LND9311web.jpg\" alt=\"Druridge in the snow\" width=\"400\" height=\"264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/LND9311web.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/LND9311web-300x198.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 400px) 100vw, 400px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-372\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Druridge in the snow<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure id=\"attachment_373\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-373\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-373\" title=\"Common Teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) (c)Martin Kitching\/Northern Experience Images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/LND9317web.jpg\" alt=\"More attractive than when they're in flower?\" width=\"200\" height=\"226\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-373\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More attractive than when they&#39;re in flower?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Once we were back at home, Sarah was watching the comings and goings at the feeding station when she called through to the living room &#8220;Brambling!&#8221;.\u00a0 I ran to the window just in time to see it fly over our neighbour&#8217;s garden and out of sight.\u00a0 I set the camera up ready and eventually it appeared at the end of our garden with a flock of Chaffinches.\u00a0 Then it vanished again&#8230;and appeared in our neighbour&#8217;s garden.\u00a0 Another disappearing act and, after what seemed like an eternity, it flew in from the churchyard on the opposite side of our house.\u00a0 That wasn&#8217;t the end of the story though, as it hid in the thickest tangles of our apple tree for over an hour before offering up a reasonable shot.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_374\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-374\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-374\" title=\"Brambling (Fringilla montifringilla) (c)Martin Kitching\/Northern Experience Images\" src=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/DSC_0432web.jpg\" alt=\"A cracking winter garden visitor\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-374\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A cracking winter garden visitor<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Now I&#8217;m back at the desk in my office, collating survey data, preparing newsletters and catching up on e-mails&#8230;but I can still see the birds at our feeding station, and a rather optimistic Sparrowhawk displaying over Choppington Woods.\u00a0 A New Year but some old friends;
