I collected Phil and Richard and we set out for a day birdwatching around Druridge Bay<\/a> and southeast Northumberland.\u00a0 The forecast suggested there was the possibility of a rain shower sometime in the early afternoon…<\/p>\n

Eider<\/strong><\/em> were well-appreciated, as Golden Plover<\/strong><\/em> carpeted the mud at low tide, and other ducks are starting to look very smart as they moult into breeding plumage; Teal, Mallard, Gadwall, Wigeon, Tufted Duck, Shoveler<\/strong><\/em> and a lone Scaup<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Tuesday’s Long-tailed Duck<\/strong><\/em> was still present, consorting with male and female Wigeon<\/strong><\/em>, although quickly vanished from view.\u00a0 Grey Herons, Little Egrets, Curlew, Redshank, Lapwing, Avocet<\/strong><\/em> and Black-tailed Godwit<\/strong><\/em> were either in the shallows or on the muddy edge, Cormorants<\/strong><\/em> were doing that fantastic Otter<\/strong><\/em> impression that they’re so good at and the bushes along the footpaths held Song Thrush, Blackbird, Goldcrest, Chaffinch, Blue Tit, Coal Tit<\/strong><\/em> and a vocal Ring Ouzel<\/strong><\/em> that expressed it’s annoyance as we walked by.\u00a0 The southward migration of Pink-footed Geese<\/strong><\/em> continued, and two each of Brent Goose<\/strong><\/em> and Barnacle Goose<\/strong><\/em> were less expected.\u00a0 Dunnocks<\/strong><\/em> were subjected to greater scrutiny than usual (with the recent arrivals of Siberian Accentors<\/strong><\/em>, you just never know…) and Goldcrests<\/strong><\/em> were watched at close range as they made their way through willows.<\/p>\n

As for that rain shower…an almost apocalyptic 5 minutes that just happened to coincide with us walking back to the car from the Oddie Hide at Druridge Pools.\u00a0 Driven by a NNE wind though, I wasn’t too distressed by it \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
