The Farne islands in late June are a chaotic place; huge numbers of birds on all of the cliff faces and around the boardwalks.\u00a0 Late July is a very different experience though…<\/p>\n

I collected Ruth and Ann from Ponteland and we drove across to the coast before heading north for a day of bespoke beginners birdwatching<\/a>, culminating in a trip across to Inner Farne<\/a>.\u00a0 Curlew, Redshank<\/strong><\/em> and a stunningly orange Black-tailed Godwit<\/strong><\/em> were all in the shallows as a female Red-breasted Merganser<\/strong><\/em> appeared to be delivering flying lessons to her little black-and-white ducklings who were still way too small to get airborne.\u00a0 Sailing across to the islands after lunch we soon encountered rafts of Puffins<\/strong><\/em> and Guillemots<\/strong><\/em>, Grey Seals<\/strong><\/em> were lazing in the surf and the vertiginous seabird colonies were now reduced to only Kittiwake<\/strong><\/em> and Shag<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Landing on Inner farne, Puffins<\/strong><\/em> were whizzing by with beaks filled with small fish, and weren’t subject to the kleptoparasitic attention of Black-headed Gulls<\/strong><\/em>, in stark contrast to just a few weeks ago.\u00a0 Terns were represented by single Arctic<\/strong><\/em> and Common Terns<\/strong><\/em> carrying fish to small chicks and a pair of Sandwich Terns<\/strong><\/em> engaged in courtship flight as a Lesser Black-backed Gull<\/strong><\/em> gave us a malevolent stare from the wall around the lighthouse.<\/p>\n

A great day out with really lovely clients, and now I know what make and model of car Ann drives I can give her a wave when I’m cycling through Ponteland on a Sunday morning \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n
