Thursday was Tony’s second bespoke birdwatching day with NEWT, and we were heading to Holy Island<\/a>.\u00a0 The weather was an extraordinary contrast to the mist, murk and torrential rain of Wednesday; clear blue skies and bright warm sunshine accompanied us on the drive north…<\/p>\n

Our first port of call on the island was the Vicar’s Garden, and we were greeted by the nasal rasping call of a Brambling<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Chiffchaffs<\/strong><\/em> were flitting restlessly in the trees, a flycatcher<\/strong><\/em> settled for just a few seconds, Redwings<\/strong><\/em> were hopping around with Song Thrush<\/strong><\/em> and Blackbird<\/strong><\/em> on the lawn as Grey Seals<\/strong><\/em> moaned from the sandbars of Fenham Flats, Pale-bellied Brent Geese<\/strong><\/em> and Dark-bellied Brent Geese<\/strong><\/em> flew north, as the rising tide disturbed them, and a flock of Bar-tailed Godwit<\/strong><\/em> put on a synchronised flying display that would rival any Starling<\/strong><\/em> murmuration.\u00a0 A Yellow-browed Warbler<\/strong><\/em> eventually revealed itself, one of three we came across during the morning, and after a walk around the lepidoptera-laden lonnens (Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell, Speckled Wood, Peacock, Silver Y<\/strong><\/em>), including watching at least 15 Roe Deer<\/strong><\/em>, and a Merlin<\/strong><\/em> harrassing a Short-eared Owl<\/strong><\/em>, we returned to the car to have lunch.\u00a0 A quick check of my mobile revealed a message about a Radde’s Warbler<\/strong><\/em> at Chare Ends.\u00a0 Now that’s easy twitching of a rarity…just a five minute walk from where we were sitting \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 The warbler proved elusive though, and it took a little while to show itself and all of the features that make it identifiable.\u00a0 Flocks of Goldfinch<\/strong><\/em> and Linnet<\/strong><\/em> were in the stubble nearby, a Peregrine<\/strong><\/em> flew overhead, scattering waders and wildfowl from the mudflats, a Merlin<\/strong><\/em> perched obligingly on top of a Hawthorn bush in the dunes and we headed back south after 7 hours on the island.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
