Druridge Bay Safari 13\/09\/2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Birdwatching is a mosaic of challenges; <em><strong>gulls, raptors, waders<\/strong><\/em> and seawatching can all test your ID skills, but at least you can usually see the bird&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>I collected Clare and Peter from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theswanchoppington.co.uk\">The Swan<\/a> for the first of their 5 consecutive days out with NEWT, and we headed across to the coast.\u00a0 An impressive charm of <em><strong>Goldfinch<\/strong><\/em> grabbed our attention and led us to a big flock of <em><strong>Linnet<\/strong><\/em> and a ploughed field sprinkled with <em><strong>Curlew<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 <em><strong>Ruff, Redshank, Dunlin, Oystercatcher<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Lapwing<\/strong><\/em> patrolled the edges of ponds and the seashore whilst <em><strong>Greylag Geese<\/strong><\/em>, and our first <em><strong>Pink-footed Geese<\/strong><\/em> of the autumn, added a touch of brown to the green fields; a taste of things to come.\u00a0 <em><strong>Red Fox<\/strong><\/em> cubs were chasing each other through long grass in the afternoon sun and a <em><strong>Hobby<\/strong><\/em> raced by, but it was midday that brought challenge, and reward&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Woodland birding, with dense foliage and dappled sunlight, can be a frustrating undertaking but we knew that the rewards were in there somewhere.\u00a0 Brief glimpses of <em><strong>Firecrest<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Pied Flycatcher<\/strong><\/em> gave way to much better views of the <em><strong>Firecrest<\/strong><\/em> as it slowed it&#8217;s headlong dash through the trees and settled into one small area, pausing frequently in full view \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 One of the sparkling jewels of autumn birding, it eventually moved out of sight and we walked back along the track.\u00a0 Peter spotted movement in a willow, and a <em><strong>Yellow-browed Warbler<\/strong><\/em> graced us with it&#8217;s presence for a few seconds, flycatching around the branches of a <em><strong>hawthorn<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Not a bad start to the autumn \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Birdwatching is a mosaic of challenges;
