{"id":2793,"date":"2015-04-01T12:09:03","date_gmt":"2015-04-01T11:09:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2793"},"modified":"2015-04-01T12:09:03","modified_gmt":"2015-04-01T11:09:03","slug":"dreich-kielder-safari-17032015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/northumberland\/kielder\/dreich-kielder-safari-17032015","title":{"rendered":"Dreich; Kielder Safari 17\/03\/2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Dull, overcast, drizzly, misty, cold, miserable&#8230;the sort of day that makes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=10\" target=\"_blank\">Kielder<\/a> a place where you really have to work for your wildlife sightings.<\/p>\n<p>I collected David from Byrness and we headed into the border forests.\u00a0 After his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/winter-wonderland-day-two-05122013\" target=\"_blank\">coastal holiday with us in 2013<\/a>, and a Farne Deeps <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=15\" target=\"_blank\">pelagic trip<\/a> in September last year, I was looking forward to meeting up with him again.\u00a0 One look at the weather told me this wasn&#8217;t likely to be a good <em><strong>Goshawk<\/strong><\/em> day, but it&#8217;s always worth trying \ud83d\ude42\u00a0 The &#8216;phantom of the forest&#8217; did remain elusive, but another Kielder speciality put in an appearance with a flock of 15 <em><strong>Common Crossbill<\/strong><\/em> chipping away noisily around the forest drive.\u00a0 A <em><strong>Roe Deer<\/strong><\/em> crossed the track ahead of us, and we headed across the border.\u00a0 A tumbling <em><strong>Raven<\/strong><\/em> was demonstrating its prowess, <em><strong>Red Grouse<\/strong><\/em> popped up and down in the heather and, probably the highlight of the day, a pair of <em><strong>Hen Harriers<\/strong><\/em> soared over the moor; the female unobtrusive and low over the heather, her mate an enigmatic ghostly grey against the dark background.\u00a0 <em><strong>Common Buzzards<\/strong><\/em> circled against the sky and, above one of our favourite <em><strong>Goshawk<\/strong><\/em> sites, a <em><strong>Peregrine<\/strong><\/em> soared over a clearing between plantations, all muscular menace and effortless grace.<\/p>\n<p>Even the days that don&#8217;t look promising still hold excellent wildlife \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dull, overcast, drizzly, misty, cold, miserable&#8230;the sort of day that makes Kielder a place where you really have to work for your wildlife sightings.
