{"id":2074,"date":"2013-09-11T11:43:49","date_gmt":"2013-09-11T10:43:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2074"},"modified":"2013-09-11T11:43:49","modified_gmt":"2013-09-11T10:43:49","slug":"whales-waders-and-wildfowl-day-1-and-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/whales-waders-and-wildfowl-day-1-and-2","title":{"rendered":"Whales, Waders and Wildfowl day (1 and) 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>After getting back to Seahouses harbour at the end of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/whales-and-dolphins-newts-north-sea-pelagic-310813\" target=\"_blank\">Whale and Dolphin Cruise<\/a>, Sarah headed south back towards home, and myself and Bill followed the coast north to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=11\" target=\"_blank\">Holy Island<\/a>.\u00a0 The breeze had been strengthening while we were offshore, and around Holy Island it was close to unmanageable, with even a heavy stable tripod struggling to remain still enough to use the telescope.\u00a0 We did find <em><strong>Bar-tailed Godwit, Ringed Plover <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Dunlin<\/strong><\/em> around the harbour, but soon beat a hasty retreat &#8211; via the ice cream van \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Heading back down the coast in the shadow of <strong>Bamburgh Castle, <\/strong>we watched flocks of <em><strong>Eider<\/strong> <\/em>loafing just offshore and a mixed flock of <em><strong>Common, Sandwich <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Arctic Terns<\/strong><\/em> held a surprise in the shape of an adult <em><strong>Roseate Tern<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theswanchoppington.co.uk\" target=\"_blank\">The Swan<\/a> was followed by discussing the plans for the next day, and on Sunday we concentrated on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=2\" target=\"_blank\">Druridge Bay<\/a> and south east Northumberland.\u00a0 It turned out to be a good day for waders, with <em><strong>Ringed Plover, Little Ringed Plover, Dunlin, Curlew <\/strong><\/em>and plenty of<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Snipe<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 Perhaps the wader highlight of the day though were flocks of <em><strong>Black-tailed Godwit <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Ruff<\/strong><\/em> arriving from the north east, pausing briefly to drink and rest and then departing to the south west.\u00a0 A bird that&#8217;s rarely seen made it&#8217;s way onto the trip list too, as the long-staying <em><strong>Spotted Crake<\/strong><\/em> at East Chevington wandered in and out of the reedbeds.\u00a0 <em><strong>Goosander, <\/strong><\/em>more<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Eider <\/strong><\/em>and lots of<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Grey Herons<\/strong> <\/em>were around the River Coquet and it was soon time to head off, collect Sarah and go into Morpeth to eat at the excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nadonthai.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nadon Thai<\/a>.\u00a0 It was an excellent two days, with a client who was excellent company, a keen birdwatcher and knows a lot of sites in and around Norfolk, where we haven&#8217;t been for a few years now, really well.<\/p>\n<p>Whales? yes. Waders? yes.
