{"id":2065,"date":"2013-09-03T17:02:32","date_gmt":"2013-09-03T16:02:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2065"},"modified":"2013-09-03T17:04:36","modified_gmt":"2013-09-03T16:04:36","slug":"not-at-all-like-a-pintail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/not-at-all-like-a-pintail","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Not at all like a Pintail&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>How do you know what a particular species is?\u00a0 That&#8217;s a frequently asked question on our tours and, fortunately, some species have a characteristic that makes them memorable.<\/p>\n<p>I collected Christine and Jean from just north of Morpeth and we headed down to Church Point to collect Sue and Ray.\u00a0 Our evening mini-safari was concentrating on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=2\" target=\"_blank\">Druridge Bay<\/a> and the southeast Northumberland coast.\u00a0 Late August is always an interesting time to be on the coast, with passage waders moving through, but also the occasional surprise among the wildfowl too.\u00a0 Scanning through the <em><strong>Mallards, Teal, Tufted Duck <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Gadwall<\/strong><\/em>, I saw three ducks flying in.\u00a0 The unmistakeable black beaks and elegant demeanour of the new arrivals marked them out immediately as <em><strong>Pintail<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 A beautiful duck in breeding plumage, but still very distinctive in plainer dress too and we watched them and discussed just how they differ from other ducks.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the trip Christine described a dress worn recently by a TV presenter as &#8216;glaiky&#8217;.\u00a0 Now, that&#8217;s a word I haven&#8217;t heard for a while.\u00a0 It&#8217;s usually used to describe a person who is odd, daft, thoughtless, foolish, clumsy.\u00a0 When Sue asked what it meant Jean had an excellent answer &#8220;Inelegant, not at all like a <em><strong>Pintail<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;.\u00a0 Then, she turned to me and said &#8220;Ha.
