{"id":2044,"date":"2013-08-21T11:48:35","date_gmt":"2013-08-21T10:48:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=2044"},"modified":"2013-08-21T11:48:35","modified_gmt":"2013-08-21T10:48:35","slug":"a-mixed-bag-of-wildlife-lindisfarne-safari-12082013","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/uncategorized\/a-mixed-bag-of-wildlife-lindisfarne-safari-12082013","title":{"rendered":"A mixed bag of wildlife; Lindisfarne Safari 12\/08\/2013"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As I collected Jaap, Nancy, Maartje and Laura for their <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=11\" target=\"_blank\">Lindisfarne Safari<\/a> it was good to see that we&#8217;d made the right decision in postponing from the previous Monday (which would have been an unpleasant day to be out and about on Holy Island).<\/p>\n<p>Lindisfarne is an excellent birdwatching location in the winter months, and can be spectacular during spring and autumn migration, but the summer brings a real variety of things to look at.\u00a0 As we walked around the island <em><strong>Starlings<\/strong> <\/em>were swirling, <em><strong>Grey Seals<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Eiders<\/strong> <\/em>were bobbing just beyond the breaking surf<em><strong><\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>Swallows<\/strong> <\/em>were feeding hungry nestlings.\u00a0 There was plenty on the ground too; <em><strong>Cinnabar Moth<\/strong><\/em> caterpillars were munching on <em><strong>Ragwort<\/strong>, <strong>Viper&#8217;s Bugloss<\/strong><\/em> was by the side of the paths and Maartje spotted, and identified, a <em><strong>Dark Green Fritillary<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 With exposed sandbars at low tide there were lots of <em><strong>Grey Seals<\/strong><\/em> just lazing about and the shoreline was bustling with bird activity; <em><strong>Bar-tailed Godwits, Curlews, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Grey Plover <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Turnstone<\/strong><\/em> were around the island&#8217;s edge and in the gooey mud of the harbour.\u00a0 <em><strong>Golden Plover<\/strong><\/em> were swirling over the island in impressive flocks before settling in the fields, an adult <em><strong>Mediterranean Gull<\/strong><\/em> was perched obligingly close as we headed back to the village, and all too soon it was time to leave the island as the rising tide approached the causeway.\u00a0 Landscape photography stops at <strong>Bamburgh<\/strong> and <strong>Newton<\/strong> on the way south were followed by distant views of lightning and then an impressively dark sky out over the <strong>North Sea<\/strong>.\u00a0 With so much wildlife in one day it would be hard to choose one highlight&#8230;but my own personal favourite was the brightest pink binoculars that I&#8217;ve ever seen \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As I collected Jaap, Nancy, Maartje and Laura for their Lindisfarne Safari it was good to see that we&#8217;d made the right decision in postponing from the previous Monday (which would have been an unpleasant day to be out and about on Holy Island).
