{"id":1995,"date":"2013-07-06T09:54:13","date_gmt":"2013-07-06T08:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1995"},"modified":"2013-07-06T09:54:13","modified_gmt":"2013-07-06T08:54:13","slug":"the-power-of-the-sea-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/the-power-of-the-sea-2","title":{"rendered":"The power of the sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We rarely let the weather get the better of us.\u00a0 Apart from our annual programme of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=15\" target=\"_blank\">North Sea Pelagics<\/a>,   where the weather really can make a difference to a trip going ahead or not, we can pretty much cope with anything the elements throw at us.<\/p>\n<p>I collected Harry and Maureen for their mini-safari on the North Northumberland coast as the first drops of rain began to speckle the windscreen of the car.\u00a0 Straight down the coast and we were soon watching <em><strong>Eiders<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>Common Scoter<\/strong> <\/em>riding up and over the surf,<em><strong> Guillemots, Puffins <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Razorbills<\/strong><\/em> loafing offshore, <em><strong>Gannets <\/strong><\/em>and<strong> <\/strong><em><strong>Fulmars<\/strong><\/em> soaring effortlessly over the sea, <em><strong>Swallows<\/strong> <\/em>hawking insects within a few feet of us and <em><strong>Rooks<\/strong> <\/em>foraging around the car park in search of discarded morsels of food.\u00a0 All of this was in heavy rain, but positioning the car at just the right angle to the wind made it possible to watch all of these birds and the dark majesty of the sea as a backdrop.\u00a0 Along the coast towards <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=11\" target=\"_blank\">Holy Island<\/a> a huge group of <em><strong>Grey Seals<\/strong><\/em> were basking in the improving weather and, all too soon, it was lunchtime and the end of the trip.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We rarely let the weather get the better of us.\u00a0 Apart from our annual programme of North Sea Pelagics, where the weather really can make a difference to a trip going ahead or not, we can pretty much cope with anything the elements throw at us.
