{"id":1888,"date":"2013-05-02T08:09:33","date_gmt":"2013-05-02T07:09:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1888"},"modified":"2013-05-02T08:09:33","modified_gmt":"2013-05-02T07:09:33","slug":"creatures-of-the-night-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/northumberland\/creatures-of-the-night-3","title":{"rendered":"Creatures of the night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even after 40+ years of wildlife-watching, there are still (in fact, quite often) occasions when I see something that&#8217;s really quite special.<\/p>\n<p>After an afternoon around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=2\" target=\"_blank\">Druridge Bay<\/a> and Southeast Northumberland with Michael and Wendy, we were heading for one of NEWT&#8217;s favourite spots along the River Wansbeck.\u00a0 The afternoon had produced some excellent birdwatching, with four <em><strong>Yellow Wagtails<\/strong><\/em>, including one bird that was almost canary yellow, a <em><strong>White Wagtail<\/strong><\/em>, four <em><strong>Avocets,<\/strong> <strong><\/strong> <\/em>a female <em><strong>Marsh Harrier,<\/strong><\/em>\u00a0and a <em><strong>Peregrine<\/strong> <\/em>hunting pigeons.\u00a0 As we passed Ellington a <em><strong>Barn Owl<\/strong><\/em> flew low across the road from our right, narrowly missing the oncoming traffic and quickly gained elevation above our side of the road with what appeared to be a look of surprise on it&#8217;s face \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p>Surprise of the day came as we walked along the Wansbeck.\u00a0 In still quite good light, a <em><strong>Daubenton&#8217;s Bat<\/strong><\/em><strong> <\/strong>was hawking low over the water.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a species we&#8217;ve encountered frequently on our trips, but never in such good light that we could really appreciate the beautiful red-brown of it&#8217;s upperparts and the white underside.\u00a0 As darkness fell, and we headed back to our starting point, another red-brown mammal finished the day for us, as a <em><strong>Red Fox<\/strong><\/em> trotted across the road.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Even after 40+ years of wildlife-watching, there are still (in fact, quite often) occasions when I see something that&#8217;s really quite special.
