{"id":1780,"date":"2012-09-18T15:57:47","date_gmt":"2012-09-18T14:57:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1780"},"modified":"2012-09-18T15:57:47","modified_gmt":"2012-09-18T14:57:47","slug":"creatures-of-the-night-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/northumberland\/creatures-of-the-night-2","title":{"rendered":"Creatures of the night"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As darkness descends it seems like a whole different world appears, and in the remnants of the daylight you need to be alert as the creatures that frequent the shadowy hours make an appearance.<\/p>\n<p>With Lawrie and Linda, Mike and Mary &amp; Pat and Janice all safely in the car, we set off for an afternoon and evening around <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=2\" target=\"_blank\">Druridge Bay<\/a> and south east Northumberland on an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=13\" target=\"_blank\">Otter Safari<\/a>.\u00a0 One of the best things, about any wildlife that we go looking for, is that it&#8217;s in a series of superb wildlife-filled locations so there&#8217;s always something to look at.\u00a0 At this time of the year, that&#8217;s often passage waders like <em><strong>Dunlin<\/strong> <\/em>and <em><strong>Ruff<\/strong><\/em>, large roosting and feeding flocks of <em><strong>Lapwing<\/strong><\/em>, <em><strong>Golden Plover<\/strong><\/em> and <em><strong>Curlew<\/strong><\/em> and gatherings of <em><strong>Linnets<\/strong> <\/em>and <strong><em>Goldfinches<\/em><\/strong> in newly harvested fields.<\/p>\n<p>Invariably, the part of the trip that I get really excited about is that bit that takes place in the half-light.\u00a0 As we walked along a riverbank, a <em><strong>Water Vole<\/strong><\/em> put in a very brief appearance and a <em><strong>Grey Heron<\/strong><\/em>, stalking through the shallows, took flight in alarm as <em><strong>Mallards<\/strong><\/em> hurried nervously away from the vegetation at the water&#8217;s edge.\u00a0 Something was unsettling them, and Lawrie soon picked up the menacing figure of an <em><strong>Otter<\/strong> <\/em>as it crossed the river.\u00a0 Two more brief sightings, as <em><strong>Daubenton&#8217;s Bats<\/strong><\/em> skimmed the water surface below us, and then it was too dark to make out any detail and we headed back, under a clear sky.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As darkness descends it seems like a whole different world appears, and in the remnants of the daylight you need to be alert as the creatures that frequent the shadowy hours make an appearance.
