{"id":1199,"date":"2011-08-15T09:00:33","date_gmt":"2011-08-15T09:00:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/?p=1199"},"modified":"2011-08-15T06:14:54","modified_gmt":"2011-08-15T06:14:54","slug":"its-otter-in-august","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/blog\/index.php\/birdwatching\/its-otter-in-august","title":{"rendered":"It&#8217;s &#8216;otter in August&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re just about at the point where our 3hr evening safaris will be starting before 6pm; early August and the evenings are drawing in already!\u00a0 Guided birdwatching, and a search for one of our favourite predators, always has an exciting atmosphere when it happens as darkness approaches.<\/p>\n<p>On my way to collect Niki and Haydn from Warkworth, I stopped off for a few minutes beside the River Coquet &#8211; corvids and pigeons were swirling in the breeze, giving an autumnal feel to the evening.<\/p>\n<p>With clients safely in our vehicle, we headed down the coast through the post-industrial landscape of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.northernexperiencewildlifetours.co.uk\/tours.php?id=2\" target=\"_blank\">Druridge Bay<\/a>\u00a0and the (only just) industrial\u00a0 heartland of southeast Northumberland.\u00a0 <strong>East Chevington<\/strong> was our first stop, producing sightings of 2 very obliging <strong><em>Common Snipe<\/em><\/strong> in the roost of <strong><em>Lapwings<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 A flock of <strong><em>Curlew <\/em><\/strong>heading south were travelling with 2 <strong><em>Whimbrel<\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0a <strong><em>Bar-tailed Godwit<\/em><\/strong> and the 2 juvenile <strong><em>Marsh Harriers<\/em><\/strong> were much appreciated as they quartered the reedbeds, flushing <strong><em>Mallard, Gadwall<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Teal<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We continued our journey through southeast Northumberland and, as the first drops of rain began to pepper the surface of the water, an obvious edginess among a flock of <strong><em>Gadwall<\/em><\/strong> heralded the arrival of the star of the show; gliding\u00a0along, sleek, dark and menacing, the <strong><em>Otter<\/em><\/strong> showed well, although briefly, as it headed across the open water and into the reeds opposite.\u00a0 Then it was time for us to do the same, and depart into the deepening gloom of the evening.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;re just about at the point where our 3hr evening safaris will be starting before 6pm; early August and the evenings are drawing in already!\u00a0 Guided birdwatching, and a search for one of our favourite predators, always has an exciting atmosphere when it happens as darkness approaches.
