Friday morning dawned dry and bright; again not exactly as predicted by the weather forecast!\u00a0 After breakfast we headed south to Newton by the Sea, and the tern colony at the Long Nanny estuary.\u00a0 The walk through the dunes was enlivened by a myriad of Common Blue<\/strong><\/em>, Red Admiral<\/strong><\/em>, Small Tortoiseshell<\/strong><\/em>, Meadow Brown<\/strong><\/em>, Gatekeeper<\/strong><\/em> and Dark Green Fritillaries<\/strong><\/em> as well as 2 strikingly attractive moths; Cinnabar<\/strong><\/em> and Narrow-bordered Five Spot Burnet<\/strong><\/em>, and Harebell, Pyramidal Orchid <\/em><\/strong>and Bloody Cranesbill<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

After the tern colony, with its ~1000 pairs of Arctic Terns<\/strong><\/em> and 40 pairs of Little Terns<\/strong><\/em> we headed north through Seahouses and towards Holy Island.\u00a0 As we passed Budle Bay, Geoff spotted a Little Egret<\/strong><\/em>, still a relatively scarce species up here, and we stopped for a while to search the mudflats.\u00a0 As well as wading birds, we found 3 Goosander<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0\u00a0 A further stop before Holy Island provided an ideal picnic spot and the theme of passage waders continued with Golden<\/strong><\/em> and Grey Plover<\/strong><\/em>, Knot<\/strong><\/em>, and Curlew<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 A walk around the iconic location of Holy Island produced Grey Seals<\/strong><\/em>, Red-breasted Merganser<\/strong><\/em> and breathtaking views from The Heugh.\u00a0 We were scanning the mudflats around the mouth of the South Low when a nearby Oystercatcher<\/strong><\/em> began calling in alarm.\u00a0 The cause of that alarm appeared just a few seconds later and we watched the Peregrine Falcon<\/strong><\/em> as it raced low across the mud before perching obligingly.<\/p>\n

Against the backdrop of another iconic location, Bamburgh Castle, we scanned the Eider<\/strong><\/em> flock just offshore.\u00a0 A lone drake Common Scoter<\/strong><\/em> was proving difficult to pin down, but the arrival of a flock of 60 scoters allowed everyone to enjoy good views and appreciate the variation in the bill pattern of the drakes.\u00a0 Just before returning to Seahouses, we stopped to scan Monk\u2019s House Pool; a Pintail<\/strong><\/em> was picked out by Roy, and 2 Common Sandpipers<\/strong><\/em> were walking along the edge of the pond.\u00a0 8 Golden Plover<\/strong><\/em> flew by and a male Stonechat<\/strong><\/em> perched close by on a fence post.<\/p>\n

An after-dinner excursion produced 2 Brown Hares<\/strong><\/em>, a Roe Deer<\/strong><\/em> and her fawn in the gloom, and the first rain of the trip…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
