Dark Skies in Kielder and Harwood
Northumberland is the location of the largest Dark Sky Park
in Europe; the third largest Gold Tier Dark Sky Park in the World. We can extend your Safari Day, mini-Safari or Prestige Tour into the first few hours of darkness, so you'll see why Northumberland's Dark Skies are so very special. You'll be guided by a Northern Experience guide with decades of experience of stargazing, using excellent optical equipment to unveil some of the stunning sights in the night sky.
is an area of forest that we know very well, as we carried out fieldwork for Bird Atlas 2007-2011
in the area. It's an excellent location for Goshawk
, Roe Deer
and Red Squirrel
and a regular wintering area for Great Grey Shrike
. Like Kielder, where we've already established our safari days, we have a permit from the Forestry Commission that allows us to organise safaris in Harwood. We'll be adding dates for Harwood trips to our calendar soon, but if you would like to discuss these trips, and learn more about the wildlife we expect to see there, then please call us on 01670 827465.
Kielder and the Border Forests are a prime springtime location for Roe Deer
, Hen Harrier
, Red Squirrel
and the other wildlife of forest and moorland. Your tour of this remote area with our experienced guide includes a journey through an area of the forest with no vehicle access to the public.
Your Prestige Tour
will begin from a location of your choice, and is an exclusive tour just for two, including our Prestige Northumbrian picnic. Safari Days
start from your location in the Kielder area, or Hexham, which can be reached by public transport
If you’re looking for holiday accommodation that’s ideal for our Kielder tours then we recommend The Battlesteads
at Wark and Whitelee Farm
at Byrness. Or. for something completely different, have a look at Wild Northumbrian

We both enjoyed a very pleasant trip much enhanced by the knowledgeable guide. We saw wildlife that we had not seen before and been on roads that we had not travelled before. Mr and Mrs Taylor, Ponteland (Kielder)
